The Publications – Bergmann Editions

In 2015 Roland Chadwick signed to Bergmann Editions Denmark and ever since there has been a steady flow of new editions of Roland’s compositions. All of the pieces are available as either Print on Demand or Download. It will take a long time to get Roland’s complete catalogue in print but here’s what we’ve achieved so far.

Tiny Wooden Gods for solo classical guitar is Roland Chadwick’s  2014 masterpiece. In 8 movements the entire work lasts 23 minutes and stands as one of the largest conceptions for solo classical guitar. The Wendy House was written for and recorded by The Modern Guitar Trio.”This five-movement composition contains some of the most beautifully evocative writing for guitar ensemble this reviewer has heard in many a day. After reading the story of Chadwick’s sister from the liner notes and then listening to this magical work I defy anyone not to be moved by the sheer poetry of this writing. In between the three slower movements are two contrasting ones consisting of a zany waltz and a highly charged, rhythmic piece, but it is in the slower passages where the composer shows his very real talent for composing extraordinarily attractive music. There is no overstatement, no pomposity or grand empty gestures; it is simply music for music’s sake. The Wendy House is a hugely enjoyable and extremely well written work for guitar trio and deserves to become a standard in the repertoire.” Classical Guitar Magazine – October 2006 – CD Reviews

Dances for Winter Oakwood for Solo Spanish Guitar were written in late 1978 inspired by the music of Vaughan Williams. “There was what I took to be an Oak tree opposite my house in Renny Street in Sydney and at night the full moon would shine through the winter worn branches and create an eerie ambience and take me to a place where the people of a romanticised village called Renny would celebrate the Winter Solstice around Renny Oakwood. It all seemed perfectly plausible to me and it wasn’t till much later that I read of the pagan rituals associated with the Winter Solstice in Europe. My motivation at the time was the idea that sometimes circumstances reach a point of absolute crisis before movement toward the good can begin.”

The pieces are titled:

I: Processional (on Mill Pond Road) II: Round Renny Oakwood III: Solstice Carol IV: Horn Dance V: Dusk (on Mill Pond Road)

The Study in E minor for Solo Spanish Guitar was completed in June 2013 and given it’s World Premier by Dale Harris at Central Civico, La Herradura, Granada, Spain as part of their Maestros De La Guitarra recital series in 2014.

Whilst it serves the purpose as a study for the development of right hand study with the use of idiomatic right hand patterns it also serves as worthwhile piece of music.
